My Coop
My Coop
When I moved this group of chickens from the brooder to the coop one evening all seemed ok. The next day I let them out in the run and they had a good time watching me work on the run. Come night time the trouble started... they refused to go in the coop. The leader of the pack would walk up the plank and look inside and go back out. I was watching this on my chicken cam. So I go outside and find 2 on the roof of the coop (run not completely finished at that point) and one outside the run in the chicken yard. So I gather them up and put them in. Next night same thing except no escapees as that hole was covered up. So now I'm wondering what the heck is different with this group from the last ones that had no problem with the coop. The only difference was the brooder was next to the garage door so they chicks had a bit more light than the first group.

So now I'm thinking the coop is too dark so off I go and get a sheet of fiberglass clear corrugated roofing. I replace the tin on the roost side with the clear and sat back and waited. Watching on the chicken cam as night approached and I was sure glad to see them all just march up the plank and into the coop and start settling down like they had been doing it for years.

I had the same problem in the beginning. So, I locked my girls in the coop for five days so that they would learn where "home" was. After that, they new exactly what to do at bed time.
Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

Homing them is a great idea. I have stags I just moved into a new coop and am training them to go to a new place at night. I may just need to try this, though hopefully not for 5 days. Thanks for sharing.:thumbsup

I figured it would be better if they wanted to go in on their own... now it's not just the place have to go but a favorite place to go to come bed time.

Good Move!! They do need some light to see.

I don't think chickens work that way. You have to teach them where home is, then they'll be happy to go there.

No teaching needed for my group, as soon as they liked it they just ran in and got settled down. Chickens are hardwired to roost at night and try and pick the best place to roost. In my case late in the year, too dark inside was not the best place for them till I gave them a bit more light so they could see, then they loved it so much they go in and out all day.

I was the only one that needed to learn that lesson.
