Chickens digging in garden

My chickens free range during the day, and there is one individual plant that they scratch at constantly. They don't eat it, they just destroy it. Is there any kind of deterrent I could use to keep them away from this spot?

I might put up a fence around the area.

Fence is the only thing I can come up with. Or tell them you don't care about that plant. They seem to only destroy plants I want to keep.
