Hello everyone.
Glad to be aboard. After retiring from the Navy after 21 years, I finally got myself a plot of land and wasted no time getting some chickens.

I have virtually no experience, but feel confident that I can (with your help) reach some success with my little flock.

My birds are roughly 3 weeks old and growing quickly.
I have:
4 Buff Orphingtons
3 Speckled Sussex
2 Black Australorp

I'm well versed in "the search feature" as I am an 8 year member of a beer brewing forum, so you won't find me asking too many questions unless I've searched first.

I hope to get to know many of you!

It's pretty relaxed here but searching first is alway a good plan...
I thought I was going read this thread and find out you where living on a sail boat with chickens :gig
That would have been neat

Welcome to BYC

I bet they could sail if they wanted to. Welcome to Backyard Chickens, you picked out some very good breeds and we didn't even help you. You really are good with the search functions.

Welcome! And I'd like to take a moment to thank you and your family for your service to our country. My husband retired off the Battleship USS Wisconsin BB64 after 26 years in the Navy. When we got married I said "I do, and I'm packed." and I stayed packed for that entire 26 years. I know first hand about how difficult it can be for families. We retired 24 years ago but our Navy days still seem like yesterday! Again, please accept my gratitude for job well done, and my hopes for a wonderful retirement.

Good morning and welcome to BYC!

It's amazing the variety of information you can find with the search feature here. I think about every topic has been touched on at one point or another, lol.

We have 3 SS and 3 BA in our mixed flock of 16 birds too. Both are beautiful breeds and friendly (especially the SS). They began laying around 5 months old so you'll be getting eggs before you know it.

Nice to have you aboard and thank you for your service!

Sounds like you have some lovely birds! They are all friendly and great on the laying.

Make yourself at home here and if you have any questions about anything, feel free to ask.

Welcome to our flock!
