so my chickens started laying about 2 weeks ago. So far my 2 orpingtons and my 2 barred rocks have been laying, and pretty steady. I also have 4 EE and hadn't noticed any from them just yet. So today I let the chickens out and went in to change the water and noticed 2 eggs dropped on the poop tray under their roosting poles. Both looked very soft, one was a dark blue color the other more of a pink. They've been eating layer feed mixed with oyster shells and the eggs I've gotten from my other hens have been great. So I guess 2 part question. One is how do I help the EE's figure out laying in my nesting boxes. As well as if there's anything else I should be supplementing for the soft egg issue? Please help.

Hi,
If you want to teach them to lay in the nest boxes you can put an egg (fake-or-real) in the best boxes and keep them in the coop while the egg is there. They will see the egg and know what to do, if some of your chickens aren't laying yet, the egg in the nest might want to make them start laying.

Also maybe your chickens have soft egg shells because they are in need of calcium. What feed are you giving them?

I do have the fake eggs in place, and it seemed to work for the other breeds. I'll try moving them and making them as visible as possible. Also I am supplementing all my feed with oyster shells for calcium and they get poulin later pellets. Also I apologize for the mistake I just realized I put this in the wrong section. Is there any way to move it???

I'm not sure... You can copy and paste it in a new thread maybe?
