We had mice in the coop so thought the chickens had mites because they lost all the feathers around their vents. Then they started dying. They lose the feathers around the vents, then get bloody and there seems to be bruising or blood under the skin just inside the vent, then they lay for a few days with blood on the eggs followed by the chicken dying. The dead chicken has a bloody open vent with no feathers. Can you please help us figure out what is happening? We only have a few chickens left.

Initially we put out closed mouse traps, that was over two months ago. So the poison was inside a closed box and were labelled as pet safe. A friend put out the same trap in her coop and didn't have any troubles.

I was wondering if it was an intestinal bacteria or virus. Is anyone familiar with any bacterial or viral diseases?

We would like to get more chickens but we are concerned that the same thing will happen.

When I find rats killed by poison they usually are bleeding out of the nose or rectum. Most poisons work by interfering with blood clotting so the animal basically bleed to death internally. The bruising and bleeding from the vent would make me think your chickens ate poison or they ate the mice that died from eating the poison. Mice and rats can drag poison bait to other locations too. Without a autopsy done by a vet I personally wouldn't be eating the eggs if you are getting any.

I would agree with that.

This could be the reason...Picking?.....Hang curtains on your nest boxes....

Picking in Chickens is caused by these factors....

Too hot
Too crowded
Short of fresh air
Lack of protein in the diet or the Coop is too brightly lit....Layer feed should be at 18%.....Fresh water at all times....

Vaseline on the areas being picked will deter them, Chickens hate Vaseline ..:)

Best wishes...:)
