Chickens dying from eating poisonous things

Just the leaves, seeds, stem, and skin of the avocado is toxic, right? I avoid the whole shebang and don't feed any to my flock, but I've never heard of the actual fruit flesh being toxic.

My adult flock has been free ranging for two and a half years. They go everywhere on this 80 acre farm, eat what they choose. Don't have any dead chickens.

That's what I thought...no one has experienced dead chickens from feeding them anything. My guess is...chickens aren't going to eat something that'll kill them. I just found it interesting all the things I was reading on here about foods that will kill them and in my lifetime (I'm 46), all years we had chickens--we've never ever lost one to feeding them something and they got every single scrap left over from the dinner table and everything from the garden and whatever they could get out on the property. I'm still waiting to hear about....someones chicken fatalities from feeding scraps and things...anyone? So far...no one can produce an instance.

How long do you think it takes them to die after eating Avocado? I put 3 over ripe Avocados in with every thing else when I cleaned out the fridge last Saturday & gave it all to the chickens. So far everybody seems to be OK but I want to know when I should start digging a hole.

I think the avocado poisoning is a myth stemming from the fact that the seeds are toxic if eaten. I was told when I had parrots never to let them eat avocado...but at the time of being told that, my birds had been happily munching avocado on a regular basis for a long time, and nobody died. (I also cooked things in teflon coated pans, another "no no", and no birds were injured in the process) My chickens get whatever food is being thrown out in the kitchen, I just keep a scrap bucket by the trash and feed it to them every evening, no deaths yet!

No idea, it was just an observation I made. The 3 dead grackles were found over the course of several months. The flesh of the fruit isn't good for them birds, but it shouldn't kill them. The skin and the pit on the otherhand will caue cardiac distress and eventual heart failure for birds.
