Chickens dying from eating poisonous things

I have observed in my brief first year of chicken ownership (they own me) that they are a whole lot smarter than we give them credit. I make an effort to feed the girls foods of good quality, whether feed or human. I avoid sugary foods, my Marans has a real "Sweet Beak", she's after any baked goods or fruit first off, and ironically the Marans breed can become fat. I have observed that they have not eaten a nibble of Calla Lilly or Licorice root but then neither did the grasshoppers so I did research and both plants are highly toxic. Be interesting to see how it goes next spring when more herbs come up.

The Chickens are hardwired for their survival, and I continue to be amazed at how well it works.

Very true!! I wonder if there's "more" hard wiring when they are mutt chickens? Kind of like pure bred dog breeds are more susceptible to certain ailments, but mutts tend to be more issue free?

My observation too. And it's amazing what my chickens won't touch as they free range in my 1/3 acre back yard. Hydrangeas, daylilies, rose bushes, basil, asters, the majority of my hostas, onions, ragweed (darn!), pokeweed, easter lilies, dafodills, trumpet vine, wisteria. However, they've snacked to the roots on beans, tomatoes, potato tops, coral bells, tulips (can't figure that one because they taste like onions), impatiens, and peony. Oh, and clematis. They've decimated my clematis!

I'm glad I started this post...it has been very interesting and I'm glad that no one has had any dead chickens from anything they've fed them or from them free ranging! Have a great fall everyone

Our weather has been so awesome in Idaho!

I don't believe that the problem is that potato skins are poisonous. It's that a chicken doesn't digest them well.

I think that for the most part they don't eat wild plants that they aren't supposed to. Things that are given to them to eat are a different story.

Use common sense when giving your chickens scraps. Don't feed them anything moldy. I wouldn't eat it and I don't expect them to either. Don't feed them foods that are sugary or salty. If they like sweet foods, give them tomatoes or sweet peas. I believe that it's the tomato plant that they shouldn't eat.

I would think that if you are on this forum then your chickens are important to you. I would therefoe think that you would want to do what is best for them and not take any unnecessary chances with their health.

The only thing that I have seen my chickens eat that they really shouldn't is styrofoam!

I don't know what it is about that stuff but they love it!

OK, I have had chickens for a very long time, because I love them so much. They are hands down the best pets to have. I feed them EVERYTHING, except meat, of course. They eat everything, and I also add apple cider vinegar to their water, I even give them cipro when they are sick. WE HAVE NEVER HAD A FATALITY DUE TO FOOD. Now, saying that, I have never given them chocolate, I did just give them old avacados and everything I eat, they have even gotten into my coffee and have been fine. Also, Note: They love red wine! So watch your glass.
