Chickens dying of stopped up sinuses?!?

okay, in all the years I have had chickens, this is totally new to me. My chickens heads are swelling up, I first thought it was a snake bite when the first one got it. They will start swelling under one eye and then it will spread to their entire head. Snot will be pouring out of their nose and mouth. The first one died before I realized it was not a snakebite. Now I have a turkey doing it. I started her on antibiotics. It is not progressing as quickly, but it is still serious.. WHAT IS CAUSING THIS!!! What can I do about it!! My chickens are free range am I am worried they have been in contact with a sick animal or bird. Any info would be much appreciated that would help me put a stop to this. And help save my turkey. Who incidentally I have only had about a month.

Hmm... sounds like a disease here. I can't really help with id-ing the disease, but coryoza comes to mind. Perhaps a picture may also help. If it is viral, antibiotics aren't really going to help the primary cause.

Do your turkey and chickens share space? They can swap sickness.

Yes, all my poultry free-range together. I had my husband lance the turkey and thick clobs of snot came out through the hole. It is really nasty.

I am sorry to hear this is happening to you. The only true way to know what you are dealing with is to have a necropsy done on a bird.

Thank you, everyone. I looked it up and it sounds like what my chickens have and they pic is exactly what they look like. It fits all the symptoms and I just recently got the hen who may have been carrying it. Hopefully I can get her treated now that I have an idea what I may be dealing with!

Hi, I would tend to think coryza, since it's much more common. When you get antibiotics, even tho a broad spectrum antibiotic will work, a antibiotic for gram-negative bacteria will work better cause it's more specific. That info should be on the bottle.

The description for Coryza said a disease of chickens but can it cross to Turkeys? That is what made me think CRD cause chickens and Turkeys pass that back and forth with ease it seems.
