chickens EATING eggs

I had this issue and put a golf ball in each nest. The problem stopped and to this day, the golf balls are still there.

Are you sure they weren't already broken? If my hens drop and egg too hard and it breaks they eat it. I have never seen them just eat an egg. Try to put cardboard or something softer on the floor of the nesting box and see if it still happens.
