OK,I know this is what they do. My question is, is there some kind of spray or dust which tastes bad to the hens?
I like letting them free range in the yard, but would like to be able to discourage them from choice plants.
I,m sure other people have this problem and would like info. on this.

The only thing that will keep the chickens from destroying your plants is a nice fence. There simply isn't any other way.

Sorry.

actually there is another way but it's time consuming. We've "taught" our chickens to stay out of out gardens with a squirt gun. My son has a battery operated one and when they get into my good plants I give them a squirt. I've been at it for a week now and they're starting to get the hint. Chickens aren't dumb and if i can train to shepherd I can train them.

Mine nibble on one of the Hostas at the start of their growth, but leave them alone the rest of the time. Perhaps, the leaves start to taste bad as the mature. Otherwise, a circlet of chicken wire will keep them away. Something that chicken wire is good for, keeping chickens out or in.
