Chickens eating worms.

I found out that my chickens really likes worms and is following me every time I get the shovel. Why do chickens like worms?

It's in chicken nature to eat anything and everything that provides protein. Worms being rarer than the chicken feed is also a likely welcomed surprise.

It's like if I always offered you a mush of fruits/veggies/meat that is nutritionally complete and tastes ok, but your neighbor offered you a hotdog today. Getting that bit of variety is nice.

Chickens are omnivores and will eat many many different foods. Way back when they had to forage and find their own food. Worms, crickets, grubs, grasshoppers, and many other insects chickens will see as a tasty treat. They will also eat mice, lizards, frogs, any anything else given the chance.

My flock love worms. Since I have lots of compost going in the chicken run, there are TONS of worms. Some the chickens dig up on their own, others they wait for me to dig up for them.
