Chickens eh?

from Maryland. Wow, please keep the cold up there, it has been cold here, but not that cold.

We are new to chickens also, we have 3 silkies chicks that we have had for 2 weeks and I am just forewarning you, it is addictive. They are wonderful so far. Congratulations on the land that you purchased and a preemptive congratulations on the chickens you will eventually have.

Did a quick search under "Social/Where Am I Where Are You?". Founda a thread titled "Canadians Check in Here". Its been going on since 2007, don't know what's in it but you might find people every bit as cold as you. Also, the Alaskan thread should have similarly cold weather and might be of value.

There are probably other Canadian threads, you might want to look around. This place is a good source for lots of info. Good Luck with your kids.

Welcome to BYC Flumes. When you say you are in the Soo, do you mean Sault Ste Marie? I'm in the BC rockies, we have an insulated and (heat lamp) heated coop. I've got barred plymouth rock and chanteclers. Chanteclers don't have the big combs and wattles on them. it's been -28C recently, I kept the chickens locked up i the coop for a couple days but other than that they are all doing just fine. Laying was at a standstill for a few days because of the cold, but the girls are slowly laying again.

One thing you will want to consider is electricity in your coop if you build one. it's come in really handy for us.

Have fun with your chickens

Thanks for the heads up....I'll be sure to gander in there :)

Howdy from Austin, Texas.Give some consideration to ducks instead of chickens.
Oh no!!!! Not yet! Once I get comfortable raising chickens.....then I'll definitely look into ducks. I'ld love to make a pond about an acre in size and have the wild ones stop in for a visit....That wold be like awesome :) Thanks for the welcome :)

Yes the Sault! lol And yes...I will be definitely be putting in electricity in the coop. The birds will have a tanning lamp! It'll be like a resort!!!! :) Ok...maybe Im getting carried away but yes, power is a must I figured. Thanks for the advice and 'warm' welcome :)

Good morning. One thing that our breeder recommended for us once our chicks are outside is called a splitter for the coop. Once the temp gets to 32 degrees it turns the heat on, and once it gets to 40 it turns the heat off. I did not realize that chickens can get too hot as well as get too cold. I could be wrong about the temps, like I said we are new to chickens also. Our breeder recommended the book (I know it sounds cliche) but Raising Chickens for Dummies

We got our chicks from another BYC member, her id is JustusChicks and there is a link to her website. She is really nice and extremely intelligent and has answered all of our crazy questions.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips 3G! And I will check ebay for the book. TY
