I was told by a friend that it is illegal to sell eggs from chickens fed food scraps (I'm in Ohio, Cleveland area). Has anyone else heard of any regulations like this, and where might I start to look to find out for my area? Our chickens are just a year old, and so far we haven't had enough surplus to sell to the public, but have been selling to friends/family/acquaintences. We'd like to expand, though, so will need to start learning about what's ok & not.

That sounds beyond rediculous to me. Check out your state ag dept. site to search for the information...also, I'd just have to add - how would anyone ever know what you fed them ALL the time??

I can understand that if you were feeding restaurant slop that could be full of meat like diseased chicken. (Not any restaurant I'd want to go to!)

But regular table scraps? Veggies and bread crusts, etc.? That should be a PLUS.

I'd call your local extension office and see what they have to say.

I'm in OH and haven't heard that one. Sounds ridiculous.

If there is any sort of regulation it would probably for the big egg factory farms and not the backyard keeper.

Furthermore, what they don't know won't hurt them. Be discreet and don't broadcast what you use. Have some regular feed on hand at all times just in case their is an issue.

Thanks! That's encouraging. I'll check out the ag extension and see what I can find. We do veggies and bread, but there's also the occasional meat (that we've made).

Im in NW Ohio and I feed my chickens all sorts of table scraps, and bug and weeds.....

The yolks are deep golden orange instead of pale yellow and everyone we give them to says they taste almost ridiculously better than store bought factory eggs!

Therefore I say that unless youre feeding your chickens OTC medications or cocaine (lol) you should be good! High protein and vitamins are a good thing!

Careful, the police may come digging through the chicken poop to see what you've been feeding.
