Chickens flying

I wondered, "Why can't chickens fly?" I've seen my chickens fly up to their treetop perch, but never fly. Do you guys know why?
 
Or a wing-assisted leap.

My California White has vertical acceleration, but little endurance.
Very true. I had a serama that full blown flew though. Took a running start and flew over my house and into the woods. Lost him for a few days but luckily found him (alive and well).

WOW that is one good flying serama.:D
 
I’ve had a bunch regularly hang out on the peak of the roof of our shed(which is taller than our single story house) and one that liked to roost in a tree at about that same height. I get they probably just flew to the edge of the roof and walked from there to the top, but the tree rooster could have only gotten there by straight up flying.
