Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

The plain, sensible advice is not so plain if you are in your right mind...shines like a new penny to me and to those who apply it.

Amen to that! And thank you to the OTs who have deposited so many shiney pennies in my pocketbook of knowledge! Happy Birthday t a wonderful thread and great people.

Happy Birthday to the thread, and a BIG THANK YOU to Bee, Fred, Al, Walt, Bruce, Ridgerunner, Stonykill, thedragonlady, and anyone else that has offered me help/wisdom with my chickens! No kidding, the day I picked up my first batch of chickens at tsc, I met a fellow chicken-keeper who told me about BYC. He said he just stalks the site, and that if I ever had any trouble, to go there first. Without his advice, I probably would have bought a pile of chicken books and never thought to look online for chicken-keeping advice. I used the site for my beginning questions, but found the number of threads with 2-3 responses that were returned to me in every search a bit disappointing and not a little confusing when every opinion contradicted the one before, and I certainly didn't know who to trust. I gave up on BYC, but returned a few months later and spotted a funny-named thread about a rocking chair on the home page. I've read every single post of this thread since July when I discovered it. Now, I don't even bother with the rest of the site - for the most part... I pretty much follow Bee around to the ff thread and her sick chick thread - I exclusively ask my questions here. I'm so grateful that I have a place that I KNOW I can trust. A community of thoughtful, respectful "neighbors" to run to screaming when I'm in distress

THANK YOU! I know you OTs have heard some of the same questions dozens of times, and I appreciate your patience with re-answering them, and maybe more importantly, your experienced, thoughtful input when someone comes here with a true dilemma that I watch you throw around and attack from different angles. The time you devote to help a distant stranger should nominate you ALL for some sort of Good Samaritan Award!
This OT wants to thank all the Newbies for their questions. You've probably staved off dementia. There is a wonderful quote, but I can't remember who said it (oops !) ..........

To TEACH IS TO LEARN TWICE

Thank you all.

Love this site...I really want to do the FF. Hope I get the hang of it!! Question..I was reading on one of the sites given...but was I reading right? Lay Mash? In the mix for FF? I thought it would just get mushy. I use the corn lay mash. So, you probably "need" the other grains in with it?

Thanks, great thread here..and, Happy Birthday!

As always, wise words from DL. I agree! I have learned so much on this thread too.

Yep, it can be mush. You just play with the consistency and dish it up when it's like peanut butter or good mortar. You don't need other grains in it but it does make it a nicer texture and consistency when you do. We've done chick starter, laying mash, a mix of mash and grains, etc. A lot of folks out there doing pelleted feeds which is just mash steamed and compressed.

That's what makes it great..you can ferment any and all of the various feed rations and just play with your moisture amounts to make it easier to dish and feed. I have holes drilled in the bottom of my trough feeder to let excess moisture escape, if any.

Yes, you can use just layer mash, although when I was using it I also mixed in a handful or two of sunflower seeds. It does get mushy, so to say. Seems to take longer to drain. I've switched to a game bird feed with added whole grains mixed in, and I feel like ore of the liquid drains off of it, leaving less mush and more individual wet pieces.... FF is a lot easier to use/ make than I had anticipated. Give it a try!

Great! A mixture I can do. I've been making fodder with wheat. Tried the barley, but it didn't do as well as the wheat, but, guessing if I so this FF, it will fit right in with a few of my other things. I have the pellets too. So, lay mash, barley, some of the wheat, and I have BOSS too..and, I do have some of the ACV...ahem..with "the mother" in it. I take it myself!
I have to get some of this started tomorrow. I won't to be buying any yogurt for them anymore from the sounds of it.

My feed is fermenting and my chooks are happy.

Thank you everybody!
Thanks Bee. My feed is also fermenting and my chooks are also happy. 16 eggs today after the overeating yesterday. Their swollen areas are all back to normal and the roosters were hugging some of the girls tonight. Content in chickenland were the hens are smart, the roosters are handsome and the chickies are all above average!
