I really appreciate the way you OT-ers work together to provide a collaborative format that is personable, humorous, and full of information. I don't comment often, but I feel as if I am a part of a close-knit group of people. As one who tries to stay current in several OT-like threads, I too would appreciate if during the "lectures" if we could hold the chitter-chatter until the end---just before the applause: )
 
We'll make it part of the next quiz rules, if Fred so wishes.

No...I agree on that point. I'd put some of my old BAs and my WRs up against any SOP, egg for egg, for their lifetime and I think I could be proud of her performance, as well as her mothering skills on brood. That they have survived on free range is also important to me, as well as with not having to have meds to stay alive and thriving. I'm not ashamed of my flocks...never have been. They are what they are and they have been good to me.

If I had to trade one of my WRs for an SOP gal right now, I wouldn't. Even if she never laid another egg, she has earned the right to live and die right where she started. I have a deep respect for a few of my hatchery gals. Had two of my oldest and most cherished BAs ripped up by a couple of young pups I adopted and it about broke my heart. I took out the gun and shot them the next day....the dogs, not the birds. I killed them also but held them while they died. It was a real shame...in their 6th year and still outlaying the youngsters.
agreed Bee. I have a few really nice old RIR's. Old farm girls, great bloodline, laying well at 4 to 6 years old. Still going broody. BUT, they are never bred with a RIR rooster as I don't have one. So their offspring are mutts who perform like their mothers...usually.We all know all hens don't perform like their mothers. I wouldn't trade those good producing, smart, instinctive, foraging mutts for a pure bred anything. They are really good at being chickens.
I'm all about the self sustaining, no medication flock. It has been working for me. And many others who won't dare speak up for fear of being attacked. I get their pm's. Many are scared to post here for fear of being attacked.

Al, if you come up with a good source for good meaties, let us know? I'll be hunting down some testimonials on hatcheries and see if these folks can get me pics. I usually like to SEE...dressed out weights vary with how they were fed, so I don't want to go on that.

Anyhooo....Nicki, you round up your posse and anyone else on here who would like to do the processing party, I'll bring the aprons and such and we'll make a day of it. Might bring the Bat's Coney Island hot dog sauce, if I can...you won't regret tasting that. You don't even need a hot dog..you'll find yourself just eating it from the plate.

That is a recipe my mother got her hands on back in the early 70s and used in her restaurant, where her food made truckers change their route to a narrow back road for miles upon miles just to eat there. The food was simply amazing..my mother was an excellent cook.

It has no ketchup but it does have mustard and tomato paste as a base. If you follow the recipe and don't play around with it, it is pretty much a crowd pleaser.

Oh my. Well I grew up in Cincinnati Ohio and they have Coney Island, Skyline chili and others....Chili hotdogs are a big deal. My sister sends me skyline chili a couple times a year. It's never the same but as close as I can get out West. Soft melty steamed buns, piles of cheese thinnly grated, and some chili sauce from some special recipe and onions. REally there is nothing better after midnight in Ohio.
