@henichillin. it is funny the purposes people keep chickens. i too had an inner city job and i find that the chickens took the stress away. i moved from the city to the country and find it a much easier life here.. also i don't have to worry about the chickens putting a cap in my ***.

okay i need some help here. i am going to post here instead of the meat bird section. i got some of the cornish x rock
14 to be exact. my weights are everywhere they go from roughly 4.5 to 5.5 lbs down to 2 lbs.they are 6 weeks old. i don;t have a time line on them. i just don;t get the variation in weight. they all look good. my feeding was this free range and 20% starter grower and moved to a 22% for a week cause they were'nt growing. then i moved to a mix of both with corn. most of there feed comes from free range. i give them the mix at night just in case some did not get enough free ranging. ok i am ready for it so lay it on me.

I think it matters a lot where you get your chicks. I've noticed the birds I got from Central don't seem to have the heavy builds of the ones I had last time, though they are gaining well and all, they seem to have more smaller birds among the group than my last group had.

I don't think you are doing anything wrong and they will grow a lot in the next two weeks but the smaller birds never gain enough to equal the bigger birds, I've found.

when i talked to di poultry to place the order for rosambros. he seem to think they came from mt healthy. what i seemed to find in the cornish x rock is the ones with the whitish legs grow slower than the one with yellow legs. someone dumped 6 chicks to 4 dellies and 2 cx's . the 2 x's with the yellow legs are as big as some of the ones with the paler legs. yes the paler leg ones are cx's. just supposed to have more of the rock breed in them. at least that i was told. the yellow leg ones are 2 weeks behind the others.
just a tid bit here. i do not like the 2 cockerel dellies. i am going to cull them anyway. i was going to breed some for dual purpose but they are jackasses. they are tiny little bullies always picking on the bigger less aggressive birds. the 2 hens seem ok just flighty.

sorry guys i could not resit this . if anybody wants to raise mixed birds for meat. mt healthy has a sale 100 chicks for 35.00 all cockerels .

OK I would like to help. I am 68, female, single, I have had chickens here in Arizona, in the desert or semi desert on and off for thirty years. I have had a lot of different kinds, in a lot of different places and circumstances. I have learned a lot, and it is valuable. I would like to share. However as you said I do tend to be blunter than some seem to be used to. I was raised on a cattle ranch in northeastern Arizona in the 50's. Whenever I have been able, the first thing I get is chickens. I love having them. I have egg layers, and I have raised meat birds and butchered. I have also raised a lot of other things. I pretty well know the good, bad and ugly. It all comes with the territory, but we do try very hard to minimize it. Experience helps that. Someone to mentor helps a great deal.

1. First evaluate your needs
2. Evaluate your circumstances.
3, Be realistic in your selection, and don't lose your sense of balance when you get your chickens,
try very hard to restrain yourself.
4 Prepare a safe place, that is workable and realistic for your time, circumstances and abilities.
5. Try to keep it moderate, don't strain the parameters, putting stress on yourself and others. It ruins the fun.

6. Now, Get healthy chickens. Don't break your rules and bring in other chickens. Just don't.
7. Determine a way to replace your chickens as needed. Either new nursery stock or a friend, or raise your own. Be careful here.
Very Very Careful, don't let your emotions get the best of you.
8. Make adjustments as needed. Make changes when you need to,
9. Find good mentors as on this website.
10. Enjoy
