Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

that's a lot of chickens. You got lucky not quaranteeing them. But we all have made mistakes. 8 years ago when i started the chicken endevor I did the same and got lucky. And you aren't kidding!

. There is, but some of us here have mutts and have happy healthy birds. Good luck with your chickens! If you are going to breed your mutts you need more roosters.

I have 82 eggs in the incubator. I expect I will have enough Roosters lol!

..must have misread on the Heritage thread that you will be 74.... And I have it on more that one good authority that you are a highly intelligent, helpul gentleman that loves the fancy, masquerading as "a kind of cranky old guy"....at least that's the rumor a couple of ladies I know are passing around.
Love the hen with the rat picture!
Off the shelf feed for Walt, DO NOT give medicated feed to waterfowl... noted.........

Anyone feed bulk milled feed that would be able to answer my questions above?

great pic. Mine run around the yard with mice, chipmunks, moles and snakes on a regular basis. That pic is perfect!

My black east indie ducks, which are bantam ducks, fight over a mouse. They gum them until finally it is gone...these are fully grown, the babies they can suck right down. The first time I witnessed that ,it really surprised me. Frogs and fish usually can't bite back, but mice can but there is no concern and no dead indies from a mouse bite.. Seeing nature at work is a lot of fun for me. I show, but the best part of poultry for me is watching the birds. I can see behaviour in the flock that mimics what humans do, but chickens do it in a more straightforward and direct fashion. Maybe I have been looking at chickens too long.....................

Hmm... I know chickens are carnivores, but it probably would take 399 other ingredients to turn an organic hippy into a yummy chicken feed. Won't the authorities come looking for them eventually? I think there are laws against that...

Well, where I live, the sheriff doesn't get all that excited when a hippie comes up missing.

(spellchecker thinks that "hippy" is spelled "hippie".)
hey wait a min. i am a hippy. a pure breed one at that. my mother and dad were both hippy people, man. i don't want to be chicken feed. i won't be good chicken feed. your may find your chickens in the middle of your field continplating their spiritual being if you feed me to them.

But think how organically karmic it is to be part of the circle of life that way!!

Besides, I heard that hemp is good for chickens, and you hippies are like 7% hemp.

Most of the hippies drive Porches and own lots of toys now, these young un's are wanna be's and they are more like 75% hemp.....at least here in Norcal. Everything is made out of hemp here and if you are nervous, you can get a Rx from the local pot doctor and buy hemp legally. (we don't give a never mind that the Feds still think it is against the law)

Having grown up in SF, I can understand your sheriffs position.

the difference is chickens aren't politically correct.

Watching the birds free range and live how they should is quite enjoyable. Any time I'm frustrated I walk out to find a mama with chicks. Watching one of my current broody's with 15 chicks is quite relaxing. And all they want from me is to either 1) leave them alone. or 2) throw them some feed or top off their water.

Walt,
One of my favorite quotes. Wish I could remember who said it. "Man is just an animal with manners".
