Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Yeah...that freezing and thawing over time seemed to be the only way I could get the chickens real enthused in pumpkins..and the sheep as well. When all the water seeped out and it's flattened and deflated looking. For some reason it becomes like crack cocaine at that point...maybe it's the time of year when they haven't had anything in the way of veggies and fresh forage for a few months, so the pumpkin is particularly needed for it's nutrients then. Not sure....I just know they don't like it fresh, barely ate it when cooked but finally finished it, and seem to be ravenously enjoying it after it's deflated, pale and with a sprinkling of mold. Go figure.

My chickens all seem to prefer it soft, whether cooked or aged. Quite a few do like it fresh, though, to the point that they will seek out pumpkins that I have stored on the deck or out for decoration. I have to hide any that I want to store for a length of time.
I have a run in shed that I use for sheep lambing jugs. I put a truckload of pumpkins in one of those stalls, to store for the pigs. I have some ewes in the surrounding paddock because they are getting close to lambing. They are chowing down on the pumpkins! Several a day. The vet was out the other day and she was surprised that sheep would eat them, too.

. No, I don't look around the threads much. I have the three that I follow and trust with Bee and the rest of the OT's. I'll have to take a look. Helps to have NYer's to touch base with as weather sometimes is a factor. Also, it does feel like we're neighbors. Thanks.

Yeah, I was puzzled when a truck I didn't recognize was coming down the driveway (usually, if I don't recognize the vehicle, somebody's lost you have to really look for my house). Then I saw DH's car. When DH told me what was going on, my first thought was "Well dang, Bekissed would be proud of you, old man. Envoius(sp), but proud!"

Yes...you are right! Envious and proud! How well you all know me.....

Mine love the pumpkin. I have ducks too and they like it. I am on my second pumpkin. They pick at it daily. The first thing to go is the seeds and pulp. Course mine will eat anything.

My pigs wouldn't even eat the broken pumpkin. The chickens will eat the seeds and slime. The only chickens that will eat the pulp is my layer pen. Who knows?

If it's stainless steel it may be okay but if galvanized tin, probably not. It will corrode eventually if so.

For two dollars and change it's not stainless. I'll try to find a plastic one to replace it- I'm sure I can slip a razor blade under it to cut the glue. I'm sure I'll be ok for a month or so until I can get the replacement.

thanks,

Big score!! DH stopped by the neignborhood store and noticed a guy with a tuck load of white oak that wasn't "cut to length". DH asked where he was going. GET THIS, he was going to the land fill. DH explains that he would save a ton of money if he just brought it by the house and dumped it in the yard!! Now, all we have to do is cut it to length and split it....almost an entire pick up truck load of wood in less than 10 minutes!! YEAH BABY!!

love things like that. A few weeks ago a county contractor was trimming trees on the road across from us, filling a truck with the chips. I went to the supervisor, asked if he'd like to dump the truck load at my place, save him sending his truck all the way back to their facility to dump it. His reply was just to ask where I wanted it, and how many loads I wanted. (one load was quite sufficient, it's probably 6 or 7 cubic yards of free mulch).
