We ONLY have sand in our runs (that's all that's out there!) and I agree.  It's super easy to clean.  We made a "scoop" out of a piece of 1/4" hardware cloth wired to a defunct (several tines missing)  horse manure fork.  It has a long handle, so  you don't have to bend over, and it easily sifts out the poop.  We only scoop underneath the outside roosts so far.  We put straw down inside the coop, but haven't had chickens in there long enough to necessitate cleaning yet.   Samantha can clean her banties in about 5 minutes because the sand is over a foot deep in that pen.  Very easy for  her.

Hi all ,in answer to Bee's q ,i joined BYC because i 'm a newbie .,had chooks for a little over 12 mths & lost one every now and then.
Didn't know why.
Read lots of threads on here but found this OT one ,read every page & discovered lots of down to earth, commonsense advice based on experience without the "BS" & without the "i know everything because i,ve had 2 chickens for a week"attitude.
As i said to Bee in my first post on here ,where I live there isn't many ppl who keep chickens & those that do seem to have a "i know but it's a secret" type of attitude,even the aussie poultry forum ,who i registered to join still haven't cleared my registration ,so i can't log on yet (been 2mths).
Went to the local poultry club ,1 1/2 hrs away but their attitude seems to be if u have the same specialist breed as me I'll talk to u ,otherwise ......,
so for me I'll just stay on here, follow the advice ,and hopefully have happy healthy chooks for many yrs
.i,ve implemented deep,litter ,use acv,about to start FF , my next project is a cattle panel coop/run like Bee's.
All i can say is, thanks for the great advice & my chooks & i Greatly appreciate yr putting in the time to pass on yr knowledge,in a straight forward but friendly manner (no frills lol) even to the other side of the world . cheers Aussie Pete

Yes...sad, though. It almost felt like she never left....you have big shoes to fill, Brie.

Don't expect I'll ever fill her shoes. My heart is just not that big! But I will try to live one day at a time, and try to make each one count...at least she taught me that. She never coasted.

I spent most of the day working on the Dom coop and run. It's looking up! And we only lost one of the layer flock chicks, and the two others that were a little on the weak side cannot be distinguished from the rest of the bunch! Isn't it wonderful what a little food and water will do for a chick? AND I am absolutely amazed at how much food those little things can eat in a 24 hour period! Somehow, I was afraid that a hundred pounds of chick starter might get weevils in it before we used it all. FAT CHANCE! They're eating machines!

Love the book ideas, TV titles and the song was great! I needed a laugh tonight! Thanks!

Okay, folks...going to try something here that I've never done before, so no makin' fun when you see it. It's a work in progress but due to so many requests, it just had to happen. I have a small webpage started and it isn't finished yet but, with all of you helping, we just may be able to turn out something useful. I encourage OTs to help me answer questions and newbies to ask them so that we can build an organized site wherein the info can be accessed easily. I'm new at this, so bear with me?
