Adult laying hens are generally worth $20 to $25 each plus shipping. Check with a hatchery to determine costs. Do not ask for the cost of chicks unless that's what you lost. Also consider the cost to repair damages to your fencing if that was involved. Ask politely and if your neighbor is unwilling to comply you might want to consider a small claims court. Put everything in writing and record dates.

Thank you all for your support my husband and I just bought 3 babies 2 weeks back so I’m hoping to have them hang out while she recovers.. should I tie her wing to her body? It’s broken right at the joint to her body. She wasn’t in pain when I was examining her but she was still in shock I think. The dog didn’t even eat them, they all had broken necks.

I would try to help her. While her wing is healing I'd predator proof the coop and run then get some started pullets or at least a retired layer and start her on quarantine so that by the time that's over your lone girl will be healed enough for integration with her new friend(s) in a secure home. She offered to pay for new chickens but to me it’s not the point, they were all my first flock and I had such a special relationship with all of them. I was too upset to talk to her again yet but she told my husband this.

Oh that was responsible of her, I like that. You could take the money and hold on to it until you're ready to start over with a new flock. I think one of our Educators has described a figure-8 bandage for a broken wing, I'll tag them. Meanwhile make her some sugar water for shock. Put 1 tsp sugar in 1 cup of warm water. You can also add a pinch of baking soda and a pinch of salt, stir to dissolve. Hold some up to her beak in a small cup so she can drink. If she won't drink, dip your finger in it and put a drop on the crease of her beak and she should swallow. Don't get any in her nostrils. Continue until she refuses by shaking her head. Here's me tagging the Educators.

I gave her some electrolytes and some fermented wet and dry food. She has towels and is in our bathtub at the moment. She hasn’t moved an inch so I had to move her to make sure she wasn’t sitting in her droppings. She’s making small noises and moving her head a bit. I have a lot of medical supplies around the house so I’m going to look into doing the figure 8. Thank you for all your support.

Immobilizing the broken wing should make her feel less pain, but you can also give her one chewable aspirin two times a day to take care of the rest of the pain. Giving her electroyte water with extra sugar can help balance her chemistry that has been totally upset from the attack. Keep it up for the next three or four days.

With her wing secured to her body, she will find it difficult to get around much. Keeping her in the tub or in a hospital crate is best. But, if I understand correctly that you've just gotten a few new chicks, if you could manage to create a space where she can see and interact with the babies, she would be much more content, and this can assist in her recovery.

The chicks have some of the funky down feathers sticking out. They are super sweet and funny at the moment, I’m going to make a little box of chicken wire that she can see and hang out with them in the tub. I’ve been looking up how best to tie her wing. Thank you for helping
