Chickens for almost a year.. first massacre yesterday. :(

Oh!! AND.. it was 3pm when we left the house, and by some stroke of miracle ALL FIVE of my others were in the coop! Ao everyone is shut up tight. I was so worried bc we won't be home until well after dark, so now no worries!

Get some Vetericyn, the gel kind, and spray it on her wounds. My rooster put himself between a coyote and his hens this spring, but luckily I was out there to chase it off before it did too much damage. He had some pretty good bite wounds. I brought him inside and treated him with twice daily rinses with warm water, diluted chlorohexidine, followed by an application of Vetericyn. He never got infected, infested with flies, or anything and is now as good as new!

It sounds like your roosters have earned their stay. When you have boys that will fight for hens like that...you know you have good ones.

Here's my thread if you want anymore ideas:

Thanks so much, hokankai- I will check that out. I'm thinking these stories of resiliency are great! I can get some CHG @ work too..

I've soaked her in a strong/hot Epsom mix three times for about a minute each. I can tell that pisses them off but they're hard to get OUT!! :(

I've mixed a 50:50 bleach/warm water solution. About to see how that works in a sharp-spraying bottle??

I can see now what's up though, I think. Top of vent is cut, filet style, and has flopped over on top of vent. Then below vnt is another hole, just to the side of whatever bone that is down there.. The pointy one.. Breast bone?

the bleach is going to sting too........ I think tweezers or needle nose pliers would be the best choice

how does she have so many maggots so quickly?

Are these maybe internal worms that are now just all over the place because of the attack/injury?

there was that TV show (OK, so maybe not at all based on reality...who knows, I don't) but they put a piece of bacon on the guy that had some maggots too deep inside him to easily pull out. They left the bacon on the wound for maybe 20 minutes and then gently pulled up the bacon, the maggots had left the guy's flesh and attached themselves to the bacon.

that might work better than vinegar or bleach which will upset them and maybe, instead of getting them to die or let go and fall off, will make them burrow deeper into the flesh to run away.

Totally guessing though.....I have no experience with this
