When I first fell in love with the bundles of peeps at the chicken swaps, it immediately lifted my mood
I grew up being a rodent owner and my beloved blue rat had just passed three months prior to a brain tumor at about 3 years old. I was grieving pretty hard since he was SO smart and wonderful. I don't think I can live without nurturing animals!
The girls have been so awesome. Every time I see them I can't help but feel better
In fact, one of them is wheeking at me and wants more hugs! They're just tremendously sweet lapsitters. (And I'm a crazy chickensmooching/hugging kind of guy...
)
It's wonderful waking up. As soon as they hear me from the other room, they all assemble in a row and squat to greet me while I'm stumbling about towards the bathroom. They wait all silently for me to get into the living room (where the coop is), then I tell 'em I'm getting their food, hurrying about and then it's all happy noises again.
Then they want more hugs before I leave for work and when I get home, all flock around me for more hugs and fresh water. My silkie hybrid's newest thing is walking out of the coop, inspecting the kitchen, gobbling up tasties I didn't know about then coming back to me.
Chickens are just so perfect in every way as a pet. They're clean, easy to keep, cheap to start up, cheap to maintain, come in awesome colors, never fail to amaze you with their alien anatomy, make awesome huggers, make all sorts of cool ambient noises, and make you breakfast!
