My vet for chickens just told me something that I thought was interesting. She said that chickens know by instinct that they are prey animals; they will hide it if they can when they're sick or injured because they know they will be eaten by something looking for any weakness. So when you see a chicken acting sick, you can be sure that it's a lot worse off than what it looks.

yes, and this is very true of pet birds, as well. If you see the slightest indication of sickness (sleeping more than usual, sitting away from the others, sitting fluffed up, not perching as well or even in a different spot, or just looking "off") it's time to hightail it to the nearest avian vet.

Hide what? Themselves or the eggs? You said 'it' and I wasn't sure what 'it' was... thx j
