So it's Monday July 14th at 12:30 and the heat of the day is upon us. Well I decided to humor my chickens with a grand opening of their "overcrowded, undersized, no way a chicken would stay in there" coops with an 8 square foot floor plan -- or at least that's what I've been told on this forum.....

So here are the pictures in the middle of the day and at least 6 chickens were caught in the very act of violating their housing ordinances. As we all know, an 8 square foot coop isn't big enough for 4 chickens -- and 6 of them are in there. Call the Fire Marshall !!!!!!!!

Now with that said, there were really more than 6 in there before we opened the lid and I'm giving all violators their tickets so they will discontinue this insane practice of "cooping together" or should we call it "coping together.". Somebody help me identify those sneaky chickens that think they can get away with it. I've been trying to break them of this terrible habit. As you can see from the pictures there were only 5 chickens in the yard and I have 17 total birds, where one was crushed by a barrel when the rest of them toppled it over.

Now I'm at a loss on how to "discipline" my chickens and "brain wash" their little bird craniums on the "proper etiquette" of roosting. As you can see in the pictures, the run is nice and clean, there are roosts everywhere, and there's a nice cozy spot underneath the coop if they want to chill out in the dirt....but no! no! no! they must crowd into their little coop where there are NO WINDOWS, NO VENTS, and certainly, NO ROOM! What am I going to DO with these silly birds?????

On a quiet Monday, owner plans a sneak peak inside a coop with a run that holds 17 pullets:

All is quiet on the western front with about 5 chickens chilling out in the shade next to the wall. It's mid-day in July:

Whoaa birds what are you doing in that coop? You aren't supposed to be in there (according to somebody) he he. I'm kind of slow and I'm fumbling with the camera but I caught 6 "violators" in the very act with one of them "high tailing it" out the door:

By time I go back around to the front of the pen -- I have a yard full of chickens running around -- 17 of them to be exact:

Now somebody please tell -- what's wrong with all the other amenities I pamper all over my birds? I have nice roosts, a clean bedded run and a nice cool "basement" under the coop along with clean water and plenty of food. They CHOOSE to go inside an overcrowded undersized coop instead. Maybe the coop is TOO appealing to the chickens. I think I'm spoiling them. Whoahhh!

I can see you put a lot of time and effort into that. It looks well put together. Like a not so military chicken fort knox.
I came up with the plan while living in Kentucky (he he). I believe in "secondary containment." My Grandma lost too many birds without it.

I thought about some strands of barbed wire at the bottom middle and top of the fence -- but it hasn't been necessary so far. If I was surrounded with coyotes and bob cats I'd use electric barbed wire -- now that would do the trick!! It certainly works on my garden.

I have an Aunt down in Kentucky and she lost lots of chickens in the beginning from various creatures. Maybe I should suggest electric barbed wire for her :)

Thats pretty intense. I'm glad we don't have many things to worry about by me. I let mine free range all day and just lock them up at night. So far I've only lost one to a very hungry predator, maybe a cat or raccoon. I didn't think coons were out during the day, but I saw it poke it's ugly mug out of the woods when I was getting back from work. So far all attempts to capture that beast are failures. Maybe it's already moved on?

Saturday, July 14th? I must be in some kind of time warp, my calender says MONDAY, the 14th. Yeah, pullets will crowd into a box. We'll see how happy they all are, around mid to late Dec, packed in there, in freezing weather. I'm sure everything will be just fine.
