Chickens in Charlotte, NC

Hi, I am considering moving, so I have checked lots of chicken ordinances in various cities. Charlotte has really a pretty liberal ordinance, and hopefully it stays that way. The phrase about 'must be kept within...' is in many ordinances. I think it primarily is meant to prevent people from letting their chickens wandering all over the place. I don't think animal control will come by and check whether your chickens are walking around your yard or not, but they will come if someone finds your chickens on the street. If you do get a permit, you might have to show them some sort of enclosure on that day.... :) As always, be nice to your neighbours and nothing shall happen to you. I would mind, however, the setbacks from the lotline. If your lot is really narrow, then that might be a show-stopper, at least on paper.

Just saw this thread. I used to live in across from Hawthorne's pizza! I would have loved to keep chickens then, but my neighbors would not have been too happy. For those of you interested in keeping chickens in the urban environment, I highly recommend building a Catawba Coop, which is an A-frame coop. It takes a bit to build, but it was my first project of its kind, and mine turned out alright (even though it may not look as nice as the ones on the site!). It's super easy to clean, keeps them safe, and you can move it around in a small yard so they can eat fresh grass every day. Also, in reference to the Black Sex-link aka Black Stars, I highly recommend them. Super friendly and great layers. They can be a bit chatty, but who wants a chicken that doesn't talk?
