Chickens in Hot Weather..need advice!

I live in the Mojave Desert also. Today my husband installed a swamp cooler for our chicks. We have a single wide trailer (pretty good sized trailer) on our property that we used to live in and it is now the chicken house since it isn't being used for anything else. I have a fan going in 3 of the rooms and we have dark curtains that blocks the direct sunlight which has helped alot even in our home. The fans have been doing pretty good but as you know it will definitely be way more hotter pretty soon.

Our disabled senior roo got heat stroke last week. By the time I got home he was gasping. Brought a fan from the house and turned it on high while tring to slowly cool him down with a little water on his combs and feet. Nothing helped. Finally, I packed him up and brought him to my cellar, where it is really coooool. Put him on a quilt in the shower with a bowl of water. About 3am he started to crowing his head off what a wonderful sound that was. I am definately going to try the frozen bottles!! I remember when I was young my mom would put a bowl of ice in front of a fan and turn it on high.

Would a mister in their run help even if the air was really humid?

good timing I was just wondering what to do today about the heat. AND now I know why my hens aren't laying. I LOVE backyardchicken!

A wading pool, works better than anything I have found. I went from having panting chickens to chickens standing in the "pools" whenever they are hot. It may take a day or two for them to start using it. I only have three chickens and use two large saucers. Last year I just used one and that was fine. Rosie, a production red is particularly susceptible to heat intolerence, but a great layer.

I'm worried abou this, too. It's not uncommon for it to be 113 at midnight here in Las Vegas, NV.

Will try the frozen litre bottles, but imagine they'll melt pretty fast.

Shade cloth and a fan sound promising, too.
