I just moved into a house and the bedroom, with no door, is occupied by 2 chickens. They have straw on the floor and the room/house hasn't been cleaned in a couple years. The owner plans to move them to the other side of the house.Should I be concerned about germs from their feces being airborne and causing illness? My respiratory and digestive issues seem to have gotten worse since being in this house (read these are symptoms from their germs). Also, once they are moved, how can this room and the section if the house exposed to their room, be disinfected and cleaned any an disease-causing germs? Thanks!! Should I just get out of there?

I like chickens, but....

Karli, I would run, not walk to find new housing for myself. I have reactive airway disease, and can not even have chicks brooded in my basement or in my attached garage without becoming symptomatic. Their dander and even fecal material is very easily air born. Both can cause respiratory inflammation or disease. Also, chickens can be host to many different kinds of lice and mites. While these biting insects do not choose human flesh, they have no issues with chewing on a human if their preferred host is not handy. And they will infest the abode. Obviously, this person who owns the house has very relaxed standards re: hygiene. This would be a night mare of a living situation for you.

I think respiratory problems would be the biggest threat to you. Chickens produce a lot of dander which becomes a fine dust that settles on everything. There is also ammonia which is a product from their poop. This doesn't sound like a healthy situation for you or the chickens. :hmm

Evict the chickens and then

Thank you for your replies. Yes, the owner is older and has let things go. The chicken roomhas no door and the 4 foot hallway opens to the kitchen. If every surface is cleaned with Virkon, will it be ok? Guess it's hard to be sure.

If they could be moved outside you could certainly clean every item, every surface in the entire house. I'm guessing that room will need a floor and all will need primed with mold blocking primer then painted.

Otherwise, sheesh I'd be gone.
