So. I just finished reading two mystery novels by Dorothy Sayers. In one, the suspected murderer has a flock of Buff Orpingtons that she can’t stop talking about. In the other, the actual murderer’s alibi is that she was scouting around for a poultry farm to buy near the town of Orpington. I bet the author had a friend or relative who talked about their chooks all the time!

Anyone have any other sightings of chickens in literature?

Something says the author has Orpingtons, and probably Buff Orpingtons at that!
I can't think of any chickens in none chicken based books, but I've heard a rooster crowing in a couple of rap songs before.

Are there many chickens in fairy tales? I can’t think of any except the Brementown musicians.
Yes. There's one book, Pretty Polly, that's about a chicken who can talk like a parrot. There's others, but that's one of the ones that come to mind.

That makes sense. Kids books feature lots of animals.
I was surprised to see chickens get so much attention in a murder mystery. I’m a big reader and never noticed them in books before. Maybe because I didn’t have chickens before?
