Hello everyone! Just joined the site. I have been wanting Chickens for a long time. I live in Chula Vista, Ca. and I believe I am able to have up to 6. Still deciding on whether to buy a coop or throw one together. I am leaning toward buying. Any suggestions on Coop purchasing and size and all around chicken knowledge. I am a sponge. I will be reading and absorbing as much as possible from this site.
Thanks ,
Jasper D

Hi and :welcome Jasper. I will leave the details up to those with more experience that me, I'll just say that if you do purchase a coop go as big as you can. Premade coops tend to overstate their capacity and be very small. The more space your chickens have the happier they'll be and the easier it will be to keep clean.

Hi Jasper and welcome to BYC. I agree with @chameleon with reference to coops. Sure, they look quaint and pretty in your garden, but they are fairly shoddy (on the whole) and will not serve you as well as converting a garden shed, for example. Either way, check out the Coops section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/category/coops.12/ and you can ask any questions that you may have on this forum - https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/coop-run-design-construction-maintenance.9/

More generally, you'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/category/learning-center.11/ and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

All the best

Welcome to BYC,

I would also build a coop instead of buying one. It will be larger for your chickens and better quality. Makes it stronger then the ones you can buy so that its predator proof. Use hardware cloth instead of chicken wire. Make it so you can stand up in so that its easier to clean for you also.
