Chickens in New Hampshire

Yes, everything loves chickens and the bad part they are predators who love to eat them.
You can post on the "Predator threads " and explain what has happened to your flock. And ask what they suggest you do to prevent further fatalities.

Thank you for joining us at Backyard chickens.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens! We are glad you joined the flock!:welcome BYC is a helpful site providing all the information you need to know about poultry! There is always space for more members on the BYC roost!:highfive: When I was a new chicken owner, I lost 5 of my chickens to nocturnal predators, raccoons or possums I believe. We built them a heavy secure coop (no holes) and everything turned out fine. Then I lost more to daytime predators, my labrador retriever broke her way into the pen and killed one of the easter eggers and my golden retrievers were also susceptible of killing some. My Buff Orpington had managed to escape the penned area one day and was beat up when I got home. Thankfully she recovered but hasn't laid an egg ever since. A couple days ago a hawk just swooped down on my Japanese bantam cockerel and pulled the head off. Now I keep my breeding flock locked in a barn. My other chickens (different flock) usually go in the coop when they think they are endangered and I know a hawk would never squeeze into a small opening that they go in. Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!
