Okay, I hope this is the proper place to put this! This is what I'd like to call a study of chicken behaviors in slow motion. My shiny new phone takes slow motion videos, and I have discovered over the past few weeks of owning it that when slowed down, chicken behaviors are quite fascinating! I hope others find these neat, too!

EDIT: So, if you're like me and out in the middle of nowhere with dodgy internet service, some of these videos probably will look horrible when you play them. That's because YouTube automatically sets the quality of the video depending on your internet speed. You can manually fix this on each video, but it will make them take longer to load. Some of them really aren't worth watching unless the quality is high, however, so I would suggest adjusting the quality if you can.

For those unsure of how to do this, first, you have to start the video. Once it is playing, click the pause button, then mouse over (or touch) the video so that the menu icons show. It should look like this on a computer (and mostly the same on a mobile device):

You will notice a little gear icon in the lower right corner, where the red arrow is pointing. Click on this to pull up a menu, then click on 'Quality'. From there, select the quality you want, but preferably the highest possible. You can probably get away with a lower quality on many of these, but most are worth it to set it to the highest quality!

Anyway, I can only put 5 videos per post, so I will start with some of my hens jumping for a nice snack of whole wheat bread:

Thanks, y'all! :) Here are the ones I was working on uploading last night.

Eating greens / foraging:

This is a longer one, so be warned! During this one, Rooska (the subject ;) ) also rejects a leaf for no apparent reason:

Drinking. I took a few videos of this because I was hoping they would get more interesting. Nope, what you see is what you get.

This one has a bizarre whining sound throughout it--that was a wild bird calling nearby.

The nictitating membrane, AKA the 'third eyelid'. This video doesn't have a whole lot going on in it, but she blinks 3 times throughout:

The rest are just for giggles. :D Some slow motion vocalizations:

This is the same hen and same vocalization sound as the above video, but set to a slower speed before recording:

And this one. I have no idea what this guy was doing.

I'm working on more every time I'm out there. A few behaviors I'd like to capture:
  • A rooster crowing. I have 17 roosters and cockerels, so you wouldn't think this would be so hard to get!
  • Wing flapping, as in that move that the boys do to kind of pump themselves up.
  • Running from different angles. I just think that would be cool. :D
  • Ducks swimming or bathing. Another that would just be cool.
  • I'm open for suggestions as well. :)

Very nice videos of "chicken mechanics".

One I would like to see is a hen pulling a worm. A few years ago when I got my first chickens one was quite fond of hanging around when I was digging. She would dash in and snag something I never saw, she was that fast. Sometimes I think the were ants or other bugs but she was also getting worms that were NOT on the surface. The only way I figured it out was one time when she didn't get it all the way out on the first try. Mostly it was "stab, swallow" so fast it was not possible to see in real time.

I wish I had a 3rd eyelid, that looks cool!

Those vocalizations sound so dinosaur-like, at least as depicted in Jurassic Park.:D
