chickens in the rain

My hens LOVE the rain. That's when they get busy scratching looking for worms, which they love. Hubby and I were planting tomato plants the other day and all of them were standing in a line waiting for us to toss them the grubs and worms we came across. It's so funny to watch the others try to snatch a bite from the hen that has it, they don't like to share.

First time we had a serious rain in months ( I am in Phx Az). It's raining cats and dogs and chickens:D. I just put them in. The pin door blew closed and I found them under the compost maker. I found them soaked to the skin. Mean while my broody mini chicken must be laughing at them. She stayed dry. Put them in and thought I needed to check out this post. Good to know that it's ok.:)

I'm so glad you asked this... Just had a total emotional meltdown about how wet my darn chickens were... I'm in England so it's 90% rain and damp .. Only had my girls for the last few months ..which has been mostly dry and sunny with occasional showers..
But today it's thrashed it all day and went to put them to bed and they were totally drenched... Didn't know what to do,,
Not like my dogs who you can just rub with a towel... Just added some extra hay to keep them warm ..
Got lots going on with them and think I'm struggling a bit - this thread just crossed one of my worries off the list..
I guess a chickens gonna do what a chickens gonna do eh ?

Now to search for the answers to my other issues

So glad to find this thread! I thought chicken feathers would dry out quickly once they got in their coop but apparently not. Gave them some extra straw to bed down in and told them good night and please don't play so long in the rain tomorrow!

Does anyone ever dry their hens off? I have a bantam frizzled Cochin who has masses of feathers right down to her toes and when it rains she gets absolutely drenched and totally muddy. I don't worry at all about the other girls but I always end up giving her a quick rinse and blow dry (she loves it!). Am I crazy??

We tend to forget that chickens are directly descended from wild birds, and their instincts are pretty much intact. No one living the wild gathers up the native birds, dries their feathers, provides heat lamps. See wild birds all the time on the lawn during the rain. Some species like it, others don't.
