I think that having your chicken coop/run set up so that they have access to your garden IS THE BEST IDEA EVER!!!
There are two different ways that you can do it.
way #1:
Set up your chicken house with two large fenced pens. One pen will be your vegetable garden, the other pen will be for the chickens. Every year you switch.
way #2:
Let the chickens in during the off season. (that is what I do). I LOVE having the chickens in the garden! They dig up ll of the grubs, and eat up everything in there. I try to leave them in as long as possible in the spring time, so that they can eat up and kill any and all weed seeds. I have NO garden clean-up, the chickens fluff up the soil.
All I need to do is rake it smooth because of their many dust bath divots.
Can't praise the idea enough, WONDERFUL.
But yes... they really can't be in there when things are growing.
