Chickens in the wild?

Sadly I used to see people dump pets and animals in far worse situations, so it's not the craziest thing I've ever heard.

Sometimes when you work with animals a long time, you get jaded because there seems to be so many people that would treat them poorly. I apologize if I came across this way and now that you have explained I see what you are doing (essentially free range) is not cruel.

Hence the question.

You said "out in the wild" - I was born in Miami - in Florida that is "out in the wild".

In some areas of southern U.S., especially in past, free-range habitats likely were swampy. In my area they are woodlots and border areas between row crops, pastures, feed lots and the yard. For other the habitat might be prairie, scrub / bush, mountain meadows and many other types.

thanks giddymoon and the poster above. i wasn't looking for all of these rude comments. like you said almost every animal was wild once. some of you gave good comments that did not support me but i like you gave a respectful post but some people just don't know what rude is i guess. i would give the chickens some feed and water and a coop to sleep in but i would let them do what they want and see if they would use the coop. and these chickens would be the hens that i let my BO's raise up and then let out.

Ok sorry. I had misunderstood and thought that when you said "extras" you meant the ones you didn't want. So I change my earlier comment. If your purpose is to keep the chickens but to let them be free then yes as long as you are willing to accept some losses. They don't have to have protection from weather and a can fend for themselves very nicely.

That said if you were turning them out because they were the ones you didn't want I frown very heavily on that even if once upon a time they were a wild animal. my guess is that most of the rude comment read your post in this light and not in the way that you intended. The problem with text is there is no tone of voice and no body language to go with it. And we all put our own spin on someone else's words and respond in the the way we read it which sometimes is not the way it was really intended.

I was thinking of doing this with a few chickens and letting them go in this gravil pit i have in my woods,I want to see them get wild and try to live within a flock and I even built a coop and put a big water pan back in the gravil pit..............so the flock would just have to find food, witch i think will be easy because I live in Ohio and i will release the flock in spring and there is a big sand hill and abunch of vines, grass, leaves, logs, trees, bushes, and its surrounded by all hills,SO PLEASE GIVE ME FEED BACK on if you think it is a good idea...............................................................

Not to mention that this is one of the many reasons why a lot of cities are saying you can no longer keep chickens at your home. Things like this happening are making it harder for people to keep these great animals as pets! Not a good idea.

I was thinking of doing it but now im just gonna build a nice new coop and put up a huge fence so they will have a big coop and a 300 foot buy 200 foot huge pen...........And im gonna put logs and flower pots and perches and a bush and abunch of food and fun stuff so they dont get bored.......my chickens are gonna love there life.......
