Me and my family are new to Vernon and have chickens. My neighbors are not excepting of this and called the town on me does anyone have any suggestions for me or are there any meetings i can attend to try to help allow chickens as pets in vernon? I dont understand this and think its rediculous that people cant have chickens. They are well kept in a big enough area. They are cleaned 2 times a day and not loud at all. Me and my family are attached to our birds and dont want to get rid of them. If there is anyone that can help please let me know. Thank you. Katie

hello.
have you talked with your neighbors? what does your coop look like? not for anything, you should have checked your town zoning first before aquiring chickens. sorry may sound not very nice. but not what are you going to do with your birds? you might be able to keep your birds, depending on your laws around you. good luck.

Hi and thanks for the response but I have had my chickens before i moved to Vernon. I have had them for 1 1/2 years. Ive lived in vernon for 4 months and now today all of a sudden its a problem. I was just asking for sugestions on what i might beable to do. I would never have moved to vernon if i new they didnt allow chickens as pets. My neighbors never came to me and complained they actually have been overly nice to me and my family. So as far as them having a problem with them the answer would have to be yes.

vernon? state? would look it up for you...but seems you have the same fight on your hands that we do. neighbors suck eggs
unless you are MI ....................forgot to say

okay. sorry for your troubles. makes more sense you have owned them and now cant keep them. on this website there are several petitions you might want to try out. going around to all your neighbors, taking statements. basically building your own case. The other thing is write down why chickens could benefit you and your family. healthy eating, fresh eggs.
present your findings, to your town hall. how many chickens do you have? i wonder if one of your neighbors made the call to the town? funny they would just come out and tell you. (the town that is). anyways, good luck to you.

you could always just move out of vernon. lol.

from another part of connecticut!!!!

I will def try the petition and it wasnt that the town came and said anything. I saw the town car pull up to my neighbors house they let them in to take pictures out there back door. Funny part is there is a fence so not sure what they took pics of. My neighbor then comes to me and said oh by the way we arent the ones that called the town on you so they gave them selves up. I then called the town and they said yes there was a complaint on us but i can get exempt if i pay $230 and fill out papers. I will try that cause i will move out of vernon before i get rid of my chickens. Thanks for the replies.

Hi Katie:

Welcome to BYC and most of all welcome to Vernon. I live in the Rockville section and recently have been dealing with the Town on my chickens. I PM'd you....feel free to contact me and I can fill you in on the details of the recent push to get a clear rule on keeping chickens in Vernon. There is no clear rule at this point and enforcement is not consistent...I think you have a good shot of keeping your birds if you can win over your neighbors. Do everything you can to get them on your side and the Town will leave you alone.

It's inconsiderate to have any farm animals in a neighborhood that is not a farm. I grew up down the road from a neighbor with chickens and they were so smelly and noisy. It is just not considerate and it really brought down the whole neighborhood. That's why zoning laws are in place. If a person asks their neighbors ahead of time and everyone is fine with chickens, that's one thing but you should never presume that they are ok. It's not fair to force that on your neighbors when they had no choice in the decision.
