My chickens have been doing better than I expected this winter, and I thought I would share some tips that keep my chickens going strong in the cold.
First of all, coops should be kept well ventilated but draft free. Curtains can be placed on windows to make this possible. Next, winter housing should also be low in humidity, so keep their litter dry and add more frequently. This also plays into the next top which is deep litter: deep litter breaks down in the winter to give you a beautiful compost in the spring. Also, as it breaks down it raises the temperature a bit in the coop.
And please don't add heat to your coop, because there are chicken breeds that can survive about anywhere except the North and South poles.
