Chickens In Ya Window

Well....I am here to not get half the stuff people do with their windows. If that even makes any sense. I grew up with chickens. All sorts....and turkeys. I did not get back into them until 3 years ago when we got 4 hens for my oldest daughter. Then I wanted breeds no one had around here so I decided to become a breeder. I know breed SLP and CCL. Plus a few backyard mixes. I can't wait to see who gets smacked!!!! So...yeah!

sideWing, if you were to build Frankenbator all over again, what would you do differently and what would you do the same, assuming you had to buy materials?

I want to build a dedicated hatcher to sit on top of the GQF that is reliable and easy to clean, so I'm leaning toward a cooler based design. I like the flexwatt, it solves a lot of challenges, I just need to calculate the heating load. The STC1000s are great, I have a second one sitting idle. I definitely want viewing windows, and I have a slim USB laptop fan that I could use to circulate air ever so gently.

Does having the mechanicals in the removable lid pose any issues while handling eggs and chicks? The LGs were downright dangerous when it came to removing the lid and setting it aside as the element is painfully hot when on.
I have been thinking about this a lot Walnut. For a hatcher I would go with the STC, flexwatt, computer fan, and celphone wiring for the fan. Having all the gear on the lid has not been an issue. I don't take it off and put it down though, I just lean it up against the wall behind it and on the edge of the bator. So it's never been an issue. It leaves me a lot of room to do what I need to and is super easy to clean out. I do have the window on the front though.

If I had to do all over again. And I may upgrade to this anyway......

I would get a mini fridge or wine cooler, window in the front, flexwatt, STC, and two fans connected to cellphone charger(s). Two egg turners, and try to leave the bottom for hatching if I could get the heat even throughout. If this STC works out the way I'm hoping, then I may build that out over the winter if I can find a minifridge or wine cooler on CL. I believe flaxwatt takes very little power to run.

That was back when he looked good!
Ouch!

I think sidewing is still cute
Thanks SC!

JK WV, I know you were talking about Val.

Heyla... got room for one more? :D ;)

I'll do a bit of intro since I just kinda fell into things unexpectedly to meet ya all, lol...

I was born and raised on a farm in the farthest area of the Pacific Northwest, right off the Puget Sound... raised a bit of everything from chickens, goats, rabbits, ducks, cows and horses... ended up in Colorado for way too many years, went to college for Zoo Keeping Tech and took Animal Biology, Animal Behavior and Animal Training among others... decided I was miserable living in the city and bailed... went to Idaho to work construction over a winter (that sucked but gorgeous place) met my OH online and he convinced me to give TN a try... moved out here to our house on an acre and a half and have not regretted it since...

He said he'd like to have chickens so we got a few Production Reds and EE's... we had to build everything ourselves as we don't have a garage, barn or even a shed at first... we'd like to have a more varied farm, but we're on a huge hill and we work with what we can...

We decided we wanted to raise our own chickens from hatching so we got an incubator and I started researching... we discovered purebreds and variety and got hooked, lol... now we've phased out most of what we started with and are working on breeding to SOP as much as possible...

I continually research and learn as much as possible and I like to share what I learn along with what I've experienced... I admit when I'm wrong and love to hear from others about different approaches to issues...

I am very lucky to have a fully supportive partner who is also the biggest chicken enabler... he works and supports our home and I take care of our home and animals...

I am serious when need be, but I love windows and will open a few of my own as well...

Btw, Tombstone is one of the best films of all time... :D
