They are not being jerks, just chickens. Chickens eat meat, fresh or cooked.
If you have a weak or injured bird, and especially if it is bleeding or have an open wound, it is best to seperate it from the rest of the flock until healed over with feathers.
this is why comercial egg producers also clip the beak on there birds, to stop them from canabalising each other. Confining birds closely leads to boredom and pecking at every little thing that is strange interesting or different. Its just a chicken behavior. it starts as chicks when you see them peck at the next chicks eyes and beak.
