Chickens laying eggs without a shell at all!

I checked for eggs today and I found a sticky mess in one of the nests, there was a yolk and egg whites but no shell..
My chickens already have calcium in their food... Whats wrong with them?

Are you feeding them grit? they need grit I had a newly bought hen lay just the yolk and white once but when we gave her grit she laid them in shells.

Mine laid one that was like a rubber ball. Weird.

They do need grit, but not for egg laying. The grit helps them to digest their food because they don't have a stomach.

Once your chickens start laying eggs they need "Oyster Shell". I have this available for my chickens in another bowl that they can eat as needed. This helps with the shell to make it strong.

Do you give them crushed oyster shell? That gives them extra calcium and helps with the shells.

i have ahen who had been laying fine, but recently started laying super soft shell eggs that break and then everyone eats them. We just got over a heat wave, which could have been an issue. But also she is molting, and that may have something to do with it, too.

I got one egg that didn't have a shell a few weeks back. it wasn't in the nesting boxes, so I suppose it might have been one of my ducks, but it never happened again. Unless it's a common problem, I wouldn't worry about it, even though it's a pain to clean up if it gets broken. Oyster shell is a good idea though, they'll eat what they need, when they need it. I also feed them back their own shells--they seem to like this better anyway.
