Chickens liking their cheeks rubbed?

I've been trying to find out why/what the smooth patches on their cheeks are and for? When i rub them they seem to enjoy it and close their eyes even. Just curious It seems they enjoy it, i was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts? XD Thanks!!

They probably close their eyes because you are so close to it. Like a reflex. But if they don't shy away they must be enjoying it. My hens love it when I scratch the underside of their crops and some the back of their heads.
