We found 3 hens this evening walking down the country road next to our farm. They are small, feather-footed chickens that I walked up to and picked up - so obviously someone dumped

them as we are miles from anyone that has any livestock. They appear to be in good health but we don't want to harm the other chickens that we have. How far away is a safe distance from our chickens in terms of isolating them? We can keep them behind some fencing but they possibly could get their beaks through. If they are in the same coop but are in a separate cage is that okay or should they not even be breathing the same air?

It is possible that they might have gotten run off by a predator, and lost. They may be someone's dear pets. So I would post a note at your local feed store just in cast.

from kansas too....i'd put them far away from your flock, then i would call your local shireff dept and inform them that you found some chickens and that you have them..if they are not claimed with in 60's there yours...that's the right way of doing it

Yes you are right. It seems like they were a kids 4H project and now our fair is over and maybe they didn't want them anymore but I will call the sheriff.

Our fair concluded recently & I overheard a girl saying that she will be letting her ducks "go." When I butted in on the conversation, her mother quickly told me I had misunderstood. Yes, I do think people set their fair animals "free."

People do drop off their animals. They get tired of them and take them to an area they figure either a good hearted person will find them or they can fend for themselves and if a predator gets them, oh well. It happens a lot. A friend told me that he had heard in a local donut shop where he goes every morning, about some one dropping off skunks in my neighborhood. At that same time I was seeing 2/3 skunks in my yard every night. I caught 13 skunks over a 2 week period.

They need to be a good distance away from your other flock and downwind from your flock, to be relatively safe. Quarantine is not, however, a 100% guarantee that they won't make each other sick later.

I had a dog and two puppies dumped at my house a few weeks ago. In my attempt to find their owner I found out we were the THIRD house they were dumped at!! I found each of them a new home and they are now happy and loved.

I don't understand why anyone wants to dump any animal off to become someone elses problem or for the animal to be hurt or killed.
