I called the township and was told that chickens are not allowed in the "City" of Reading. Unfortunately we are right by the city limits. What I do not understand is you can not have quiet chickens but you can have as many dogs as you want?!?! This makes NO sense at all! I bought the chickens anyways (2 (F) Red Pullets, 2 (F) Comet Pullets and 2 (?) Plymouth Rocks) and am keeping them inside for now but am wondering what needs to be done to change this?? ANYONE please help! We have only had the chicks for a few hrs now and my yr old daughter is already hooked!

Maybe try to start a petition to allow a few hens and no roosters.

I thought of that but the area I reside in is mostly "old farts" that like to complain about anything and everything so getting people in my area to sign would be next to impossible.

Good for you! I would have gotten them anyway too. I agree with the petition idea. During the depression the federal government hosted a movement to have americans raise their own chickens to feed america! Come on people! 20 dogs but no chickens? I recently met a man in mohton pa who was, luckily, grandfathered into keeping his birds and I had to laugh because he said that a little egg bribe with the neighbors goes a long way. Too true.

I forgot to update. I added 10 more today.. LOL. 1 Bantam Silkie, 4 Buff Orphingtons, 3 Coturnix Quails, and 2 Red something (I forget the name. lol) Now the total is 16 }:)

We went and looked at a 3br property today that allows "farm animals" and is cheaper than what we are paying now for our 3br single! Not to mention the new property has a lake in the back yard!! What could be more relaxing than hearing the soothing clucks of the chicks while sitting on a bench, fishing in your back yard! :)

Yay! Good score for you! They're like potato chips aren't they? One is never enough. You are going to have so much fun with them. I have 2 orpingtons right now that are the NICEST chicks I've ever had. My flock is up to about 50ish lol. I love them all. Most of all my silkies and d'uccles. Best of luck to you with them and they are simply too cute.

Ps an open body of water can be dangerous. It makes you want ducks too. They're hilarious but soooo messy lol. I have 2 and they take up more of my time than the hickens do! But they are my babies and i'd never give them back.

Thank you! Keep in mind, I just "started" getting birds yesterday and have 16 already.. LOL. When and IF we get this other place, I am sure the flock will grow FAST!
