Chickens "not allowed" where I live...Opinion?

I have 1.5 acres and the coop is 100 ft from the nearest neighbor. It is legal to have chickens in the county but the covenants of my area says no chickens. I have talked to my neighbors about getting some hens to make sure they are fine with it. I am also building the coop in the back of a shed so that it is not overly noticeable. I would say go for it if your neighbors are fine and accept that if they complain then you send the chickens to another home.

You better not. Chickens are a major health and pest concern. God forbid if they got loose from the coop and started reproducing? The whole neighborhood would be overrun with chickens in a matter of weeks, and then they'd peck the eyes out of all little kiddies, eat all the flowers. Seriously, have you seen Jurassic Park? You've heard chickens descended from dinosaurs. This ordinance was put in place to protect people, why else would they have such a law in a free country? Sorry, couldn't resist. Evil chickens anyway.

@ the duck wisperer. you said "they're (chickens) not pets, as people tend to forget" and yet my city Code says: allowed 3 hens as pets. so it depends on your definition of pets and interpretation of the law. just say'n.

UM, No, but I don't see how you can say that someone needs 3 acres to raise chickens. Can you please explain this to me. We live on 2.5 acres and we have 45 chickens. They all have plenty of room.

In our town the ordinance was changed largely due to the efforts of a child with pet chickens. She got the chickens and then found out she was not legal. It didn't seem to make much sense since the nearest "big city" allowed residents to have chickens plus a goat in the yard. Our town is small and bordered all around with farmland. So, she got to work and petitioned the city council to change the ordinance. It took a couple of years, and she was able to keep her chickens in the meantime.

Anyway, you might try to find some like-minded people in your area and do what this child did. In the meantime, if you can't wait - and I understand the NEED for chickens

it would most likely be to your advantage to at least get your neighbors on board with it.

Good luck!!

you have 3 chickens. i have 40. 40 chickens on 1/5 of land would not work very well, now would it. Please reread my post.

anyway i kinda agree with moabite. in a way haha. thats funny.

Id be careful but if its alright with your neighbors ( and your landlord) dont see why not
