Hello...
Introducing myself...

I'm Wendy, but you can call me sn0w. I've always wanted chickens but the neighbor's chickens growing up were mean. I met someone last week who told me it doesn't have to be that way!

So after an intense week of reading Building Chicken Coops for Dummies, Raising Chickens for Dummies and the Chick Days, I've ordered by 4 chicks, filled out my city application form, purchased a coop and am preparing my brooder.

I'm looking forward to learning and counting the days til the little girls arrive!

Greetings from Kansas, sn0wwhite, and

! Pleased you joined us and happy you took the poultry plunge! You'll find them friendly and fun - not mean! Best wishes to you!

Thank you for the welcomes!

@ocap, I ordered a Black Australorp, a Buff Oprington, an Americauna (couldn't resist the blue-green eggs) and a Silver-Laced Wyandotte.

The woman who told me her chickens were friendly recommended a store called Egg Plant and so I ordered based off of their recommendation for good layers, friendly birds that should be tolerant of a Minnesota winter.

Anyone have any advice for a new egg like me?

snOw,
we have similar taste in chicks, I have three of your four, I did not get the blue eggs, let me know if they have chocolate centers, if that is the case I will not be able to resist.

happy to have your join us. There is much info here - you might try the Learning Center, Raising Backyard chickens, and "where am I, where are you" to find your state thread.

It would provide you with more localized info regarding type of coop, for the climate, best places to buy from, breeders who may be selling breeds not available elsewhere.

Welcome to BYC!!!

Thanks, Ocap, Drumstick Diva and Mr. MKK Farms. I appreciate the welcome and tips as I try to find my way around the place. And I'll let you know about the chocolate, Ocap!

I've read 3 books so far getting ready for the chickens, but the one thing I don't know is if Chickens tend to be afraid of heights. I live on a cliff and there's no fence along the back so I'm wondering if I let them loose in the yard, will they jump off or will they look down and decide it's best to stay up?

some have a very difficult time jumping off a roost that is two feet above the ground, depends on the breed and then each chicken is also different in its fear of heights. I do not think that you have a problem with the cliff.
