Chickens: Pets Or Food?

Our chickens are pets and that's it. Most of my family is Vegetarian (except my dad, but he still won't eat the chickens). We love getting eggs from them because the last thing I want to do is buy those nasty store-bought eggs that come from those poor battery hens. I don't support the cruel battery hen egg factories and I feel good about going out to collect the eggs almost everyday from our chickens and knowing that they came from happy, healthy hens.

I understand that many chickens are used as a source of food-both eggs and meat. That's fine, it's the cruelty that they go through at the factories and slaughterhouses that makes me sooo mad and irritated because I have absolutely no idea how someone can do something like that. But understand that many people raise their own chickens and give them a great life and kill them only when needed to feed themselves or their families. And when it comes time to kill one, they do it as humanely as possible and they respect and thank the chicken for producing for them and being of such good service to them. That's fine. But our chickens are pets and when you bond with them as much as I have, there's no way you can kill them to eat or even send them off to be processed by someone else so you don't feel as bad about it. Killing one of our chickens would be like killing one of our dogs. It would be wrong and horrible and unbearable. So, they are our "pets", but I sometimes like to call them companions or friends. Because that's what they are to us. They aren't machines that just lay eggs and have no feelings. They do have feelings, obviously, and they can be wonderful friends. I know because right now I have a 26 day old baby chick that lives in my bedroom in a brooder box. I feel as if she's my baby and I care for her and feed her and protect her and she thinks I'm her mother.

A year or so for now, I know that she will remember me. And there's no way I would be able to kill her just for me to eat. If I had the choice to go hungry or eat her, I would choose to go hungry. It's like if you would rather eat your own child or go hungry, and you would obviously go hungry instead. lol I care about all of our chickens too much to hurt them, and that includes eating them for a reason such as if they stop laying, if they become aggressive, if they get too old to produce anything, etc...any reason at all. The only reason we would kill one of them is if they were suffering and had to be culled. And even then we would bury them in our "animal graveyard" to rest in peace, rather than eat them.

So, all of the chickens that we currently own (and any others we have in the future) are destined to live a life and never EVER have to worry about being eaten. Our chickens are pets who provide my family with companionship, a great experience, and eggs until the day they die of some natural cause (such as disease (unless we can cure them), predators, or old age). Even in their old age, they can rest assured that we don't care if they can't give us anymore eggs. Sure, eggs are helpful and we love getting them, but we love our chickens more than the eggs they give us. And I'm sure that someday they will thank us for that love and caring we gave to them.

Was going to be both, but my wife loves them so, that there is no talk of eating one. I must admit that I support her feelings myself. They have become pets that feed us. To be fair tho, it is a lot of work for a little food to process your own. If I was going to go through with it, I would rather it was a goat so as to gain maybe 20-25# of meat for the trouble.

That said, the only reason I started in poultry is my belief that the economy will not recover as quickly as in years past. This time is different, and that is why I did a garden and poultry. If things got bad enough, we would eat some of our birds.

I prefer turkey meat far more than chicken. I like chicken in soups.

Mrs. Fluffy Puffy :

PETS!!!! Yes, we buy store bought chicken for meat. ( I FEEL SO SORRY FOR THE POOR CHICKY, THOUGH! )
The oldest chicken I've had was 13 years old and was still laying eggs! She didn't die of old age, though something got her. She was a Buff Orpington hen.

I am the same way

Strictly pets for me. They provide eggs, which I eat, but I never kill and eat my pets. I also do not buy chicken to eat. I am actually pescetarian, meaning the only meat I eat is seafood. Luckily, I live on the Gulf Coast where we have the best seafood in the world!

I love chicken. I love fresh eggs. I can't kill anything and new to the farm thing. True farmers are the best.
I love BYC and the people in it. I have silkies so No I'm not going to eat them. But If I was lucky enough to go to a farmers home for dinner and they had fresh chicken. You better bet I would clean my plate. Everyone on BYC's understands be kind to animals and live of the land.

Pet/food/hobby. We raised some cornish X for meat but are now hatching eggs for extra roos to butcher. I have LF hens for eggs and to eat their offspring and their are a couple of the hens that have more personality that I like more than others. And I have silkies for pets/hobby. Just cause I think they are cute. Also, want to sell eggs and silkies as a way to help support my chicken addiction. They are not cute and cuddly like my dog or my kitten but they do put food on my table.

Nope, not pets. Meat and eggs. Though if there's a particularly sweet buff orpington she might get to stay on as a pet for the kids. But the majority of the hens will be killed once they aren't producing and the rooster if he decides to be a jerk.

I am NOT an animal rights type

I believe God gave us dominion over the earth and that includes using animals for meat, milk, eggs, leather, etc. At the same time, I also believe that since they are sentient, they should be treated well. I don't think traditional factory farming practices are okay, that's part of the reason we decided to start raising our own.

We named the meat birds "mcnugget 1-15" which pretty much sums up our attitude. But don't fret, they live a very comfortable life and are well cared for!

Hi bmelenco, remember me.

It certainly does sound like you like to get people's blood pumping.

Well you know where I stand on this, but here goes.

I have read this entire thread and I have to say been enlightened. I love my chickens. I haven't eaten chicken in 6 months and if my family does its not in my house. We eat meat once a week and I am looking forward to the day when my kids are willing to go all vegertarian. I have always thought, from the time I brought their little fuzzy butts home in the cardboard box from the feed store, these are pets that are going to produce eggs. We kept the brooder in the living room for eight weeks. The kids my husband, and neices and nephews love them. Even the cats and dogs accecpt them. Yes we do eat the eggs, for protein. We have no rooster...no fertilized eggs.

I am one of those quircky people who has a house chicken. A full size Ameracuna named Gabby. (my avartar). I had no intention of letting chickens in the house. But stuff happens that we don't expect. We aquired her and her sister from some people that had their flock killed by a dog. My flock of 7 month olds accepted Lola but attacked Gabby. I was told that my chickens would kill her. Now even though I only had this chicken for 8 days, she was my pet. With that comes certain responsibilites. I brought her inside and tended her wounds. We put her in a brooder in the basement for two days. Once she calmed down I moved the brooder to the living room so she wouldnt be alone. Next we let her out in the house and yard supervised. My flock has reopened her back 4 times. She is terrified of them and thinks she is part of OUR flock. When you see a chicken sprawled out on her side on a bed napping with me, two dogs, and two cats you can not help love her.

So what I have learned... My chickens are my pets. But I do not feel the same deep connection with the outdoor girls that I do with Gabby, or my cats and dogs (who also live inside). If Gabby got really hurt or sick I would take her to the vet. ( I also have taken guinea pigs, hamsters, and cockiteils to the vet.) But I am not sure I would do that for the outdoor girls. It would not be because I don't care, rather I don't have the money. My girls will all live untill they die. Naturally. We will be building them a retirement coop for them. So I really think that for ME it comes down to sharing a space with something. I totally believe that all animals have feelings. Even fish are smart enough to know that when you go up to the glass they should go to the top for food. And if you try to catch them with a net they feel fear.

Joy, Food , and Fear... every living thing shares these things. As long as we are mindful of these things and relieze just how big of on impact our actions have on those around us we will be fine.

I have NO problem with other people eating their "pets". I am sure everyone here does the "deed" as humanely as possible.
