Chickens prefer to roost in the run

I don't think I want to completely roof it, since it is already shaded and a roof could trap heat in the summer

Depending on what is providing the shade, it might already provide some rain protection too.

Or maybe attach something like an umbrella to the hardware cloth roof, to shed the water from their sleeping spot. (I'm thinking you could test the idea with one of those cheap umbrellas that only costs a few dollars, so not much money or time spent until you know if it works.)

My girls roost in the run also. They started this in the hot humid summer but just never went back. Since it is roofed and predator proof I just leave them to it. We get cold here so I've put up tarp with ventilation and they have stayed out all winter.
