Chickens purring????

Mine purr too...I also have an African grey that coos or purrs.

I like to talk to them doing the "Awk, awk, awk" sound. They all 'awk' back. So we walk around the chicken yard, saying, AWK, awk, AWK, awkkk aaawk"!

We have a couple of silkie hens who have done this while sitting, and after the eggs hatched, she purred to the chicks- almost constantly. It is a sweet sound- we like to listen to them too!

Our chickens have purred as they go to sleep since they were babies. I loved it when they'd all lie down like a soft blanket and trill their beautiful song.

I didn't know other chickens did this, too! I thought it might be a chick thing or something. You mean they won't grow out of it?

oh yes! the other day I got a little crazy and decided to try and "talk" to my chickens. I got my roo all excited he was running around checking on everyone. And then all the sudden they all looked at me for some sound I made. Then I made a different sound and they all looked at the sky...weirdest thing! but I am not sure what sound did it and I couldn't get them to do it again. But it was entertaining!

Haha... I talk to my chickens as well, the reactions are sooooo funny!!

Permilia purring... and sleeping on my chest as I read a book in bed... don't judge, I just couldn't put her back in the brooder with the others just yet... had to hold her just a bit longer. : )
Is this the sound you're speaking of?

My Rhode Island Red "purrs". She does this usually when she is roosting, but sometimes when she is just standing around contentedly she also "purrs". I love the sound. It is a very peaceful trill. She probably learned it from her mama when she was little. My other two (two different breeds) don't make the sound. I would assume it isn't breed-based but that any chicken can do it.
