Chickens purring????

Mine "purr" when they're happy. Usually scratching or dust-bathing. But its more like a Trill, yep.

After my girls go up on their roosts, and I close their door for the night, I stand outside their windows for awhile just so I can listen to them purr. I LOVE this sound! It's a complete contentment sound.

Same here. Do they do this all night? I've thought about putting a baby monitor on my nightstand - I'm sure that sound would help me sleep better!

Mine purr when they see me coming with a bowl of pasta... I answer them and they all wait for me to get there...B/c I feed the silkies
first. But the big girls know they're next.

And you're right...they also do it when i put in peat moss for them to dust bath. they end up laying on top of each other so EVERYONE can have a dust bath...very funny.

Mine do it while dust-bathing! I call it the "Trill of Happiness", and it's adorable.

I have heard them doing a similar sound when they see danger in the sky, but I can't really tell what's different about these two sounds.

I love this sound too! My DH always asks why it takes me 30 minutes to shut the doors on 2 coops. Because I can't stop listening to my happy chickens purr.

My DH asks me the same thing b/c I find myself doing the same thing.

I find it very relaxing to listen to. Although, If I'm quiet they do seem to stop but once they know I'm there they will start up again.

they also growl, soft...long deep growls...and coo..one of my roos started making the laying song!!!! When my hen was laying...she was making the sounds and he was helping her like it would really get her going...I have never seen ths.

we have dogs...I have a roo that barks...kid you not....

Ha! I've never thought of it as a purr! It is a very cute sound, though. Kind of a whistly-trill. We always called it their nighty-night sound because they make it when they are sleepy. It is a very happy sound.

Oh how I'd love to hear that!!! I have a pullet that honks like a goose (and when she's laying an egg she sounds like someones strangling a goose), but yours is better. I bet that makes for some great entertainment!
