Chickens refusing to eat feed

My chickens won’t eat pellets. I get Purina Flock Raiser crumbles (20% protein) and feed it to all ages and they like it. They don’t waste it and they don’t spill it. Laying hens have oyster shell on the side.
They don’t get any treats until near end of day when they’ve eaten most of their feed.
I check the mill date on each bag I buy to make sure it is fresh. If it’s 2 months or more old, I shop elsewhere.

If they take back to the chick starter, then I'd wager it's the higher protein they're after, as well as preferring crumbles to pellets. Some chickens are pickier than others, and feed has to be transitioned slowly from one to another, where you mix them together for a while. And sometimes offering a wet mash works wonders. Looking ahead, you might get more enthusiasm with an all-flock feed that has about 18% protein, with a calcium supplement in a side dish. I will throw in that my Welsummers are a bit more on the "fit & trim" side.
